Embracing My Identity in my Work

Zacks covered the Israeli Scouts Concert as part of his work with TC Jewfolk.

I am a proud Jew. I go to synagogue almost every week, serve as regional president of my youth group, and I keep Kosher inside and outside my house. I also understand that it’s often hard for any minority in the media to publish their perspective. That’s why I wrote the editorial about being Jewish and how that relates to my politics, why I understood the importance of covering the Israel-Hamas War, and why I decided to write for TC Jewfolk instead of a different community news source. I also pushed for stories to highlight minorities in the newspaper, such as when we got more religious holidays off from school or giving each affinity group a CLO at the end of the year.

Diversity of Thought

In a prime example of diversity of thought, Zacks interviewed a senior who supported the near-universally-opposed East Door closure.

I also pushed for a variety of voices on every story, encouraging people to go beyond their comfort zone. I did this by example, making sure I always interviewed students with a diversity of backgrounds, but especially diversity of thought. I am always in support of providing both the point and counterpoint for a perspective, which is why I enjoyed editing the perspectives section because it required that I have both sides. I believe that being forced to interact with an opposing point of view makes your argument stronger.
